In forming a turned welt upon a straight-bar machine needle loops of the first of a series of courses having a given number of loops are retained are welt hooks and knitted into a later course having a larger number of loops. In one embodiment every fourth needle loop of the first course is retained. After knitting the last course B of the first series, yarn behind alternate needles, such as 102a, c, e, is transferred to the adjacent needle. Knitting then recommences on all needles. The welt is completed by depositing the held loops on spaced needles thereby obtaining a less-bulky seam. In an alternative embodiment alternate needle loops are retained, and two loops knitted through each of the first series when knitting is commenced on all needles. |
