1,198,108. Producing Be-Al alloy composites. P.R. MALLORY & CO. Inc. Nov. 28, 1967 [Nov.28, 1966], No. 10606/69. Divided out of 1,198,107. Heading C7D. Composites of up to 85% of Be with an alloy of Al are made by mixing particulate Be, particulate Al alloy and a halide flux agent melting the mixture, the flux removing the oxide film on the Be so that the Al alloy wets the Be and prevents expulsion of the alloy by the Be as the composite cools, and chill casting the melt in a mould to form a composite of Be grains dispersed in a matrix of an Al alloy. The initial Al alloy may contain Mg and Si, the flux may be one or more alkali, or alkaline earth, metal halides (e.g. 0À5-2% of SiF and SiCl in the ratio of 1 to 3) and the raw materials may be melted at 1300‹ C. in argon. The cast composite may be heat treated at 400‹ C., water quenched and aged at 220‹C. |
