摘要 1307216 Coating glass with metal oxides PILKINGTON BROS Ltd and C R BAMFORD 16 April 1970 [23 April 1969] 20769/69 Headings C1A C1M and C1N Metal oxides are produced as coatings on glass in a process which comprises passing a continuous hot glass ribbon through a substantially enclosed region, through which a constant flow of flame inhibiting gas is also maintained, and directing a compound, which pyrolizes to form a metal oxide, in an organic solvent against at least one surface of the hot ribbon where it pyrolizes to produce a metal oxide coating. Specified compounds are cobalt octanoate in toluene, iron acetylacetonate in methanol and/or toluene, stannous octanoate in toluene, titanium acetylacetonate in isopropanol, ferric chloride in methanol, chromium, cobalt or zirconium acetylacetonates in toluene and butyl titanate in isopropanol or butanol. In the illustrated embodiment the enclosed region 5 is set up between forming area 2 for glass ribbon 1 and annealing lehr 4 said glass ribbon being carried on rollers 3. The enclosed region is sealed by means of walls 17, gate 14 and aprons 16 and 18 and manifold 15 supplies flame inhibiting gas such as nitrogen under gate 14 to complete the seal. Further flame inhibiting gas, which may be preheated to assist in maintaining the temperature in zone 5, is supplied to enclosed region 5 by means of manifolds 19 and gases are removed from said region by means of ducts 10. Spraying is carried out using at least one deposition means 8 which may be a static spray or may traverse back and forth across the moving ribbon in slot 7. Alternative deposition means include a plurality of static or moving sprays and may include electrostatic sprayers. In an alternative embodiment the enclosed region 5 may be incorporated into the annealing lehr. Sensors may be incorporated into the apparatus to ensure that the oxygen content is maintained at the desired low level, e.g. below 4- 6% but also at a level high enough to give the desired quality of coating, e.g. more than 0À5-1%.
