A plane magnetic recording medium has written into it, instantaneous values of the radiation intensity detected by a head moved over the surface of the object under examination by a head moving in synchronism with the detector head. Instantaneous positioned information is displayed on direct reading instruments in the control unit and marker information can be written into the record by an auxiliary combined record/playback head tracking with the main writing head. The playback element of this head passes the marker data into a separate magnetic memory to which simultaneous parameter data is fed in parallel with that fed to the main writing head. Automatic erase facilities and optional made switches are provided.
