[Also in Divisions H1 and H2] An underwater searchlight comprises a watertight housing 1 containing a lamp 17 and three reed contact units 15a-15c which are actuable by a magnet 12 movable on the outside of the housing to control both the supply of power to the lamp and the energization of a motor 23 which moves the lamp axially to focus the beam of light. The magnet, which slides in a bore 10 in the handle 9 of the searchlight and is controlled by a thumb-wheel 14b, rests normally at the extreme left of the bore and on being moved to the right causes the contact unit 15b to close first followed by the contact unit 15c. The closure of unit 15c energizes relay 25c which closes contacts 30, 31, thereby completing the circuit to the lamp 17 and energizing relay 25b which closes contact 27 and changes contact 29 controlling motor 23. Further movement of the magnet opens unit 15b so that the lamp remains alight but does not move. On moving the magnet to close unit 15a the relay 25a becomes energized thereby closing contact 26, to keep relay 25c energized, and moving contact 28 to start the motor 23. The motor is stopped automatically at the extreme positions of the lamp by limit switches 33, 34. Return movement of the magnet to the position in which only unit 15b is closed causes contact 29 to change over and the motor to run in the opposite direction, thereby returning the lamp to its initial position. When the magnet is moved once again to its rest position the relay 25b is de-energized and contact 27 opens, thereby de-energizing relay 25c and switching off the lamp. The searchlight is powered by accumulators 8 and may be provided with an additional lower-power bulb which is also mounted in the reflector 16 and can be switched on and off by an additional reed contact unit.
