<p>Flux element for use on a fusible guide tube during electro-slag welding, comprises: (a) flux composition surrounding the guide tube and delivered freely to the weld as the guide tube melts, and electrically insulating when solid and electrically conducting when molten, (b) a protective outer element surrounding the liquid composition to protect it against damage, such that the flux composition insulates the fusible guide tube above the weld and produces flux at the weld as the guide tube melts. A claimed example of the flux compsn. is 1.25-2.25% ferromanganese, 2.75-4.75% of 50% ferrosilicon, 5-10% CaO, 5-10% SiO2, 47-67% fluorite, 5.25-7.25% liquid silicate, 2.75-3.25 algin or CMC, and 13.50-15.50% dolomite.</p> |
