1304153 Changing refractive index of transparent polymers WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 19 April 1971 [19 March 1970] 24027/71 Heading C3P [Also in Division G2] A method for producing a pattern of changed refractive index in or on a body of transparent material comprises polymerizing the material, sensitizing the material for subsequent molecular structural change (cross-linking) tending to increase the refractive index upon exposure to radiation, and exposing the body to the radiation. The radiation may be electromagnetic, preferably ultra-violet, or a beam of electrons or neutrons. The material is preferably aged after exposure. The body may be a poly-acrylate (preferably poly-(methyl methacrylate)), and sensitization may be by exposing the monomer to diffuse U.V. in the presence of oxygen, by incorporating peroxides, e.g. dicumyl peroxide, t-butyl perbenzoate, into the monomer, or, in thin samples, into the polymer. |
