[Also in Division H1] An oxygen cathode or anode in an electrolytic cell containing a solid, oxygen ion-conducting electrolyte comprises an electrically conductive support member 6 of non-sealing steel and in electrical contact therewith, e.g. through an oxide scale surface membrane 5, a porous mixed oxide layer 4 containing praseodymium oxide and one or more of chromium oxide, nickel oxide and cobalt oxide, preferably formed as a permeable layer on the roughened surface 1 of the electrolyte 2. The support member may be in the form of a corrugated or undulating sheet or a woven or non- woven steel wire fabric. The electrolyte may be a plate or tube of ZrO 2 and Y 2 O 3 . In use, oxygen is introduced into the spaces 8 and cavities 3 in the electrode. |
