Apparatus for winding sheet material 39 comprises two parallel spaced rollers 17, 41 forming a nip 56 in which a roll 134 is wound on a rod 21, a guide 52 being provided at each end of the roller pair for engaging a respective end of a rod, the guides 52 being pivotable about a fixed axis 22 to move an engaged rod 21 between a rolling position in the nip 56, a cutting position and a discharge position, and at least one of the rollers being pivotable simultaneously with the guides 52 to facilitate rollchange. As shown, a plate 26 carries the guides 52 and the roller 41 so that all can pivot about the axis 22 when the piston rod 82 of an actuator 83 is retracted. In operation, when the roll 134 has reached its desired size the pistonrod 82 is moved downwards to that the guides 52 and the roller 41 pivot clockwise to increase the gap between rollers 17 and 41. This movement releases a new rod 21 from a magazine 19, the new rod falling on to the web 39 for rotation by the first roller 17. A cutting mechanism 88, including an electrically heated wire 111, is then actuated so that the web is severed between the rolls 17 and 41, (Figs. 3, 5 and 6, not shown). The leading end of the cut web 39 is wound round the new rod 21, while the pistonrod 82 is further retracted until the guides 52 form an inclined plane from which the full roll 134 can drop on to a conveyer (Fig. 4, not shown). The cutting mechanism 88 and the roller 41 together with the guides 52 are then returned to the positions shown in Fig. 2, thereby completing one winding cycle. |
