Nordihydroacronycines of the formula are prepared by heating 1,3-dihydroxy acridones of the formula wherein R is hydrogen, halogen, nitro, trifluoromethyl, C 1 -C 4 alkyl or C 1 -C 4 alkyloxy and wherein R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen, methyl, ethyl or benoyl, with an alkylating agent of the formula wherein Z is -CH=CH 2 or -CH 2 -CH 2 X and X is chlorine or bromine, in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst in an inert solvent. In the case where R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen in the product, the product may be alkylated to form corresponding compound where R<SP>1</SP> is methyl, ethyl or benzyl. 5 - Hydroxy - 2,2,11 - trimethyl - 3,4 - dihydro- 2H - pyrano - [3,2 - b] - acridin - 6 - (11H) - one is produced as a by-product in the reaction of 1,3- dihydroxy - 10 - methyl - 9 - acridone and 2- methyl-1,3-butadiene in the presence of zinc chloride to form nordihydroacronycine. |
