[Also in Division C4] An energy-responsive luminescent display device comprises an electroluminescent element 1 caused to glow by an A.C. voltage V a applied from a source 5 through a blocking capacitor C s . The optical output L 2 has a waveform controlled by a D.C. field V b (from a source 5), whose magnitude is determined by an energyresponsive resistive element 2, whose resistance R p is in turn determined by an incident energy source L 1 (which may be light, magnetism or mechanical shock waves). In Fig. 1 a matching resistor R s shunts capacitor C s ; but in Fig. 2 (not shown), R s shunts element 1 and output L 2 is therefore a negative image of L 1 . As described, Fig. 3, there may be a plurality of electrodes 17, 14, 18, a capacitative layer 15, a plurality of resistive layers 16, a layer 13 of photoconductive material (corresponding to resistance R p ), a resistive light shield 12, electroluminescent layer 1 and a transparent electrode 11, mounted on a glass plate 10. The positions A, B of switch S correspond to the circuits of Figs. 1, 2 respectively. Storage is achieved by a residual D.C. field which polarizes element 1. One of two light pulses occurring per cycle can be extracted using a synchronized light chopper 7. The compositions of the photoconductive 13 and electroluminescent 1 layers are described (see Division C4).
