1283006 Polymer compositions KURARAY CO Ltd 19 April, 1971 [27 March, 1970 (2)] 23516/71 Headings C3C C3G C3P and C3R A polymer composition comprises an intimate mixture of (i) 10 to 90 weight % of a polyurethane prepared from (A) a polymeric diol comprising 30 to 100 weight per cent of polyethylene glycol of M.W. 200 to 10,000 and 70 to 0 weight per cent of a polyester or polyether diol, other than polyethylene glycol, of M.W. 200 to 10,000, (B) an organic diisocyanate and, optionally, (C) a chain extender, and (ii) 90 to 10 weight per cent of a copolymer derived from 5 to 80 weight per cent of an α,#-unsaturated carboxylic acid and 95 to 20 weight per cent of an α,#-unsaturated carboxylic acid ester, the carboxylic groups of the copolymer being ionically cress-linked by a metal of Group I, II or III of the Periodic Table. The composition may be prepared by mixing the two polymers (i) and (ii) and introducing into the mixture, as cross-linking agent, a salt, hydroxide or alkoxide of a metal of Group I, II or III or a monomeric mixture comprising the unsaturated carboxylic acid and the unsaturated carboxylic acid ester is copolymerized in the presence of the polyurethane elastomer to produce an intimate mixture of the two polymers, to which is added a cross-linking agent as specified above. In the latter method a graft polymer is partially produced. The polyether or polyester diols which may be used in conjunction with polyethylene glycol in the production of the polyurethane are polypropylene glycol, polytetramethylene glycol or the polyester derived from adipic acid and ethylene glycol or propylene glycol. Preferred α, #-unsaturated carboxylic acids are acrylic and methacrylic acids and the preferred α,#-unsaturated carboxylic acid esters are methylmethacrylate and butyl acrylate. The compositions are suitably prepared in the form of solutions in inert organic solvents and may be moulded by a dry method in which the solvent is vaporized or a wet method in which the solution is coagulated to prepare moisture permeable films. |
