1,207,410. Steering column3. BENDIX CORP. 9 Sept., 1968 [20 Sept., 1967], No. 42737/68. Addition to 1,096,804. Heading B7H. In an axially adjustable steering column comprising two telescoping hexagonal shaft ports 12, 14 having force transmitting means arranged to rotate one part with respect to the other for eliminating torsional play therebetween a torsionally flexible portion provided in one shaft part permits engagement of the mating surfaces of the shafts at a fail-safe connecting portion of the column when the torque on the shafts exceeds a predetermined value so that overloading of the force transmitting means is avoided. The flexible shaft portion is a reduced diameter section 30 disposed between respective force transmitting and fail-safe portions 12A, 12B of the shaft part 12, or a series of flexible struts (Fig. 8, not shown) formed in the shaft part 14 by cutting a series of longitudinal slots therein. The force transmitting means may include balls 20 forced into respective undersize holes 22 in the shaft part 12 as shown or into opposite ends of a single hole so as to project therefrom, or inwardly deformed portions of the shaft part 14 (Fig. 7, not shown). The flexible shaft portion may be torsionally preloaded so that the portions 12A, 12B of the shaft part 12 or the corresponding portions of the shaft part 14 are relatively twisted and further force transmitting means can be dispensed with. |
