The invention comprises sulphohydrocarbyloxy coumarins where the hydrocarbon moiety contains at least two carbon atoms and the or each sulphohydrocarbyloxy group is linked directly to the coumarin carbooyclic nucleus, and salts thereof. The carbocylic nucleus may also be substituted by halogen, alkyl, aralkyl, alkaryl, aryl, alkoxy or aryloxy. They may be prepared by reacting a hydroxycoumarin with a compound MOH, where M is a cation other than H, and a hydrocarbon sultone, the resulting M salts being converted to the free acid by a cationic exchange resin and thence to other salts if desired. The products are used in electroplating baths. |
