Brine electrolysis electrode - of composite structure with spinel type surface

Electrode consists of an electroconducting substrate or support (pref. valve metal), an electroconducting surface consisting of a spinel deposited on the substrate, and a layer consisting of an oxygen cpd. of a platinum group metal of the second transition series placed between the substrate and the surface. Used in cells for electrolysis of aqs. solns. of alkali metal chlorides. The electrode combines the long life of solid noble metal electrodes, and the low cost of graphite electrodes.
