Menthanehydroperoxide mixts - as cheap and effective catalyst for emulsion polymn of vinyl monomers

Cheap, readily obtainable catalyst for the polymsn. of vinyl monomers in emulsions, obtd. in high yields and having the same activity as more expensive cpds. The catalyst consists of a mixt. of m- and p-menthane hydroperoxides obtd. by hydrogenating purified cymol, which is available as a petrochemical in commercial quantities, in presence of Raney Ni at about 240 degrees C and oxidising the mixt. with O2 or pref. air in an aq. soln. at 70 - 150 degrees C. The activity of the catalyst is equal to that at pure p-menthanehydroperoxide.
