1339434 Treating wood DOW CHEMICAL CO 30 Nov 1970 56680/70 Headings D1B and DIP [Also in Divisions A5 and C7] Wood is seasoned and/or modified by' (a) impregnating the wood in a confined zone by immersion in a treating fluid comprising a halogenated hydrocarbon containing 1 or 2 carbon atoms and having a boiling point between 35‹ and 129.44‹C the impregnation being conducted at from ambient temperature to 121‹C under sufficient pressure to maintain the treating fluid in the liquid state, (b) removing excess fluid and (c) contacting the wood with steam or a vapour of a halogenated hydrocarbon falling within the definition in step (a) above in the confined zone at atmospheric or superatmospheric pressure and without a subsequent vacuum step to heat the wood and to remove retained hydrocarbon and, if seasoning, water, from the wood. The halogenated hydrocarbon may comprise a solution or dispersion of: preservatives, e.g. pentachlorophenol, 2, 3, 4, 6-tetrachlorophenol, 2, 4, 5- trichlorophenol, 2, 4, 6-trichlorophenol, 4-chloro-2-chloropentylphenol, beta-naphthol, copper naphthenate or phenyl mercury oleate; dyes; fire retardants, e.g. bis (2-chloroethyl) chloroethanephosphonate, tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate, tri (2, 3-dibromopropyl) phosphate, aziridinyl phosphine oxide, or trisaziridinyl phosphine oxide; polymerisable monomers, e.g. styrene and acrylic monomers, with or without a polyether anti-blooming agent e.g. polypropylene glycol.
