Apparatus for applying a closure lid to a container comprising a rolling head operable to deform a peripheral flange of the lid to hold it to the container. The rolling head comprises a working roller support structure rotatable about a vertical axis, a series of working rollers mounted on the support structure by roller carriers which are pivotally mounted on the support structure for pivoting movement about horizontal pivot axes and a backing roller disposed about the vertical axis of rotation of the rolling head and acting on the working rollers to bias them laterally outwardly as they run around the peripheral flange of the lid so as to deform it. The rolling head is movable vertically within a chamber which receives the container and can be evacuated to enable the container to be closed under vacuum conditions.
