The vacuum circuit breaker has a stationary contact on a support bolt and a moving contact which abuts the stationary contact from below during contact making. The stationary contact is associated with a device reducing the contact recoil during contact making. The end of the support bolt (24) of the stationary contact (17), outside of the vacuum vessel carries an inertial mass (21) which is movable in the direction of motion of the moving contact (18). The inertial mass is preferably of identical magnitude with that of the moving contact, possibly including that of the connected drive elements. The inertial mass may be in the form of a metal block, secured at the end of the support bolt and shiftable in a threaded bolt.
