The cable laying reel (4) is suspended from the helicopter by a cable (1). The cable is paid out via a control arm (2) with guide reel (5). The arm is linked to a band brake (8) operated by a servo ram (6) and remote control from the helicopter. The brake can be arranged to be partly controlled by the drag on the cable so that a steady feed is achieved without snagging and endangering the helicopter. The cable is rapidly laid over a line of pylons.
