The invention relates to a rotating vibration mechanism which generates two different amplitudes. The vibration mechanism is incorporated into a compaction drum of a road roller. A shaft 5 which is mounted on the drum so as to be rotatable carries eccentric weights 25, 26. Housings 27, 28 which are fastened on the shaft 5 in the direct vicinity of the weights 25, 26 have chambers in which a flowable material 33 is accommodated. The flowable material 33 consists of metal parts such as steel balls, small shot or liquid metal. The flowable material 33, upon rotation of the shaft 5, moves in one direction into a first position in the chamber in order to increase the amplitude of the oscillation of the shaft 5 and of the drum. The flowable material 33 flows, governed by the rotation of the shaft 5, in a direction opposite to the previous direction into a second position in order generally to balance out the shaft 5 and reduce the oscillation amplitude of the shaft 5 and of the drum 1. <IMAGE>
