Process for the preparation of para-hydroxybenzaldehyde, characterised in that a Lewis acid is reacted with a Schiff base, of formula: <IMAGE> where R1 is an aliphatic radical comprising from 1 to 10 carbon atoms, and R2 is an aliphatic, heterocyclic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic radical, comprising from 2 to 10 carbon atoms, and then hydrolysis is carried out. The Schiff base can be obtained by reacting a primary amine with an ether.
