Immunologically reactive gag proteins of LAV are expressed in bacterial cells. The gag proteins are encoded by a recombinant plasmid which contains prokaryotic transcriptional and translational signals for expression, followed downstream by a DNA sequence which comprises a part of the gag region of LAV. Preferred expression signals are selected from an inducible operon and/or an operon which can be repressed, such as the trp operon. The gag proteins are isolated from the bacterial host and used in diagnostic analyses which detect the presence of LAV antigens or LAV antibodies which are immunologically reactive with LAV. In addition, the proteins which are prepared in the process in question are used as a vaccine against infection which is caused by the virus for the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
