The process for purifying waste water (effluent) from volatile pollutants by a gaseous desorbent is carried out in a column (1) which has two mass transfer parts (2, 3) having an arranged structure. The loaded waste water is introduced through a line (6) into the top mass transfer part (2) and enters herein into mass transfer with counter-current desorbent. Beneath the mass transfer part (2), the purified waste water is conducted out of the column (1). The loaded desorbent is returned into the column (1) beneath the bottom mass transfer part (3) and enters into mass transfer with absorbent conducted in counter-current. The salt solution resulting in this is returned into the column (1) above the bottom mass transfer part (3), before its entry into the column (1), a part-quantity being withdrawn as by-product and a corresponding amount of fresh absorbent being fed. The process enables continuous waste water treatment without environmental pollution. Because of the combination of the desorption process and chemisorption process in the same column (1), a simple design of the apparatus is achieved. <IMAGE>
