The apparatus has an application roller (1) and a counter roller (18) between which the workpiece (17) is pushed through. The workpiece is provided on its surface with a layer of a free-flowing material by means of the application roller (1). The apparatus is based on the object of configuring the receptacle, assigned to the application roller (1), for the free-flowing material in such a manner that the adjustability of the metering gap and the cleaning of the receptacle for the free-flowing material are simplified and doctor blades are not required. The receptacle is constructed according to the invention as a metering trough (2) which can be swivelled about a horizontal axis (8) and in which, in the upper region, a rolling doctor roller (23), which is supported on the application roller (1) with adjustable contact pressure, is rotatably mounted. The apparatus is used for manufacturing plates for the furniture industry. <IMAGE>
