Inductor for surface hardening of workpieces, e.g. crankshafts, drive shafts etc. for vehicles, mounted between clamping units in the hardening machine, is split into two halves transverse to the workpiece. A power source (1) supplies the fixed inductor half via two conductor branches (2a, 2b) and the displaceable half via two further conductor branches (4a, 4b). Contact between the two halves is made at two contact points (6a, 6b), which are displaced w.r.t. each other in the axial direction. Inductor is of solid Cu with cooling channels. ADVANTAGE - Uniform depth of hardness even in contact region.
