A spitting basin for use at the dentist is provided with a substantially bowl-shaped inner wall with a drain hole at its lowest point. A rinsing tap with an outlet opening for rinsing liquid which is directed towards the inner wall is provided for the purpose of rinsing the spitting basin clean. The cross section of the outlet opening is such that a flat jet of rinsing liquid is formed and is directed at least approximately parallel to the adjoining inner wall, as seen in the circumferential direction of the inner wall. The outlet opening may, for example, be slot-shaped or comprise a row of holes.
