PURPOSE: To obtain a terminal equipment adaptor interfacing a data terminal equipment DTE with either of a frame relay FR or a switched multi-megabit data service SMDS so as to be transparent to the DTE. CONSTITUTION: A terminal equipment adaptor 20 has an FR element 24, an SMDS element 22, and a protocol and address conversion element 20. The FR element understands the FR protocol and follows it. The SMDS element understands an SMDS protocol and is operated according to it. The protocol conversion and address conversion element executes address and protocol mapping between a frame relay and the SMDS.
