The input signal passes through an adjustable analogue amplifier (2) to the first digitiser (1). The n+1 output data bits are applied to a logic unit (31) producing a signal which denotes whether the output is at a max. or a predeterminable threshold level. A fixed-gain amplifier (3) forwards this signal to an integrator (4) for setting the adjustable gain. The setting (S) is weighted as necessary and supplied via a second digitiser (5) for multiplication (6) of the digitised data, cancelling errors due to the variation of gain.
