PURPOSE:To produce a catalyst carrier having a large specific surface area and excellent in heat resistance. CONSTITUTION:The surface of a porous material having many pores 92 is coated with a metal oxide 1 to obtain the objective catalyst carrier 10. The porous material is a laminar silica porous body or a laminar silica-metal oxide porous body. The laminar silica porous body 9 has a structure formed by bending laminar sheets 91 each consisting of tetrahedrons of SiO4 and partially bonding the upper and lower sheets 91 and has many pores 92 between the layers. The metal oxide 1 is alumina, titania, zirconia, tin oxide, niobium oxide or boron oxide.
