A water saving device for a flush toilet employs a piston cylinder unit utilizing water present in the tank to provide a controlled rate of closure of the flapper valve once the operating handle has been actuated. This rate is designed to restore the flapper valve to the closed position after only a proportion, e.g. one third of the content of the water tank has been discharged, which amount will be satisfactory in many instances. Where full discharge is required, either additional actuation of the operating handle is needed or flush handle is maintained pressed down.
