A method for separating serum characterized by comprising collecting blood into a blood collection tube containing a sludging agent and a blood-coagulation accelerating agent, shaking the blood collection tube to dissolve the sludging agent and the blood-coagulation accelerating agent in the blood, coagulating the blood by allowing to stand, and shifting a porous plate having a diameter smaller than the inner diameter of the blood collection tube from the surface of the coagulated blood toward the bottom of the tube to thereby remove blood cells suspending in the serum from the serum; and a device for separating serum characterized by consisting of a system for opening the cover of a blood collection tube containing blood which has been coagulated in the presence of a sludging agent and a blood-coagulation accelerating agent, a system for shifting a porous plate having a diameter smaller than the inner diameter of the blood collection tube from the liquid surface toward the bottom of the tube, and a separation system for sucking the serum above the porous plate. By using this method and device, blood can be coagulated within a short time and blood cell-free serum can be obtained without resort to a centrifuge.
