PURPOSE: An automatic transmission control device and method thereof maintain a constant the shift range according to the opening angle ratio and move a vehicle to a safe area if the consecutive driving will of a driver is perceived. CONSTITUTION: Whether the range selection signal of a shift lever is normally detected or not from running information on the running of the predetermined speed is decided. If the signal is not normally detected, a counter is implemented through a timer. Whether the range selection signal of the shift lever is normally detected or not in the predetermined time is decided. If the signal is not normally detected, a driver's driving will is decided. Then, a transmission is controlled according to the decided driver's will.
