Coating a substrate with an adhesive based on thermally meltable gelatin includes insertion of the solid adhesive into a meltable container, partially melting the adhesive on one side, feeding of the molten adhesive through at least one hole in the container, providing the molten gelatin with at least one discharge point, and transfer of the molten gelatin from these points to the substrate. Independent claims are included for: (1) A unit for deposition of the adhesive on the substrate as described above; (2) an adhesive based on (w/vol): water (20-50), commercial gelatin (20-50), sugar (0-30), magnesium sulfate (0-20), rheological additive, e.g. (0-1), antifoam agent 1 (0.1-1), antifoam agent 2, especially a mixture of hydrocarbon and non-ionic tenside (0-1), preservative 1, an organic aromatic compound (0.1-1), preservative 2, especially a quaternary ammonium compound (0-1), and scent (0-1).
