PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external electrode type fluorescent lamp capable of preventing atmospheric discharge and conduction phenomenon, for reliable and safe liquid-crystal display. SOLUTION: The external electrode type fluorescent lamp comprises a glass tube 1 of outer diameter 1.2-10.0 mm in which a phosphor film 2 is formed on the inside wall surface and a discharge medium containing at least xenon gas is sealed in, an internal electrode sealed with a lead terminal 4 drawn out from at least one end side of the glass tube 1, and an external electrode 5 comprising a conductive wire wound, in spiral, around the external peripheral surface of the glass tube 1 over almost entire length in the tube axial direction. A minimum insulation distance of a winding terminal part 5b of the adjoining external electrode 5 from the glass tube 1 drawing-out part of the lead terminal 4 of the internal electrode is set to at least 2 mm, or the winding terminal part 5b is covered with an insulating material, to provide the external electrode type fluorescent lamp where occurrence of atmospheric discharge, etc., is prevented.
