PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To give a magnetic recording medium which is excellent in the magnetic properties, such as thermal fluctuation resistance and in the glide height properties, and which can be manufactured readily. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium comprises a non-magnetic substrate 1, a non-magnetic base layer 3 formed thereon, a magnetic layer 4, and a protective layer 5 fundamentally. The non-magnetic base layer 3 has a body centered cubic(bcc) structure, and between the non-magnetic substrate 1 and the non-magnetic base layer 3, an orientation adjusting layer 2 which make the non-magnetic base layer orient to (200) preferentially is formed. The magnetic layer 4 have a crystal structure such that a columnar microcrystal grain is inclined to the radial direction, and the ratio of the coercive force Hcc in the circumferential direction to the coercive force Her in the radial direction of the magnetic layer 4, Hcc/Hcr, is set larger than one.
