The pipe coupling includes a housing with a body 2 and a nut 3 having a conical inner surface 35 engaging a conical split ring 4, which is compressed as the nut is tightened on the body thread 24 to firmly clamp a pipe received through the nut and into the body. The opposite ends of the split ring 4 defining the split are laterally offset from each other so that, under compression, the split ring (4) is able to clamp pipes having a wide range of outer diameters. The split ring 4 may include a plurality of hard teeth fixed on the inner face of the split ring 4, which become embedded in the outer face of the pipe as the split ring is compressed. As the nut is tightened, the butt end of the pipe, which impinges against the deformable stops 25, is forced further into the body 2 deflecting the stops and ensuring that the end of the sealing ring 6 is forced into firm sealing engagement with the conical surface 23 on the inner surface of the body and compressed against the outer surface of the pipe.
