PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ultrasonic probe capable of extending a directive characteristic in an arrangement direction of piezoelectric vibrators. SOLUTION: A width in a scanning direction of second acoustic matching layers 5 is selected to be a width d3, and a width in a scanning direction of the piezoelectric vibrators 3 is selected to be a width d1, wherein a relation of width d3<width d1 holds. That is, the width in the scanning direction of the second acoustic matching layers 5 is narrower than the width in the scanning direction of the piezoelectric vibrators 3. A thickness t (width in a transmission reception direction) of each of the second acoustic matching layers 5 is nearly equal to the width d1 of each of the piezoelectric vibrators 3. Thus, the width d3 of each of the second acoustic matching layers 5 in the scanning direction is narrower than the thickness t, and then the aspect ratio (width d3/thickness t) is smaller than the unity. Consequently, the magnitude of the lateral vibration is decreased and the directive characteristic of the piezoelectric vibrators 3 is widened. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
