The invention concerns a method for operating a four-stroke internal combustion engine comprising a prechamber ignition and a piston moving between bottom and top dead centers, the intake and exhaust valves being actuated for example by a phase-shifter/camshaft assembly. The method is characterized in that at the end of exhaust time the closure of the exhaust valve is delayed by a crankshaft angle between +20° and +80° relative to the upper dead center; and in that at the intake starting time the opening of the intake valve is delayed by a crankshaft angle between +20° and +80° relative to the upper dead center, so that a fraction of the combustion products of one cycle is recycled into the chamber for the next cycle; and in that the intake is quiet and is performed with unstructured aerodynamics resulting in axial stratification of the load in the chamber.
