An image forming apparatus, a sheet discharging device and a method for controlling the sheet discharging device are provided to acquire a request time for initial selection for processing staple after changing a staple cartridge and perform initial selection of idle striking without requesting additional recording members, thereby controlling the image forming apparatus optimally. An image forming apparatus comprises the following parts: an image forming unit(101) for forming an image in a recording member; the sheet discharging device(29) for stapling the recording member after forming the image; a transferring unit(4,24) for transferring the recording member to the sheet discharging device and the image forming unit; a sheet discharging device control unit for controlling an operation of the sheet discharging device; and a controller for controlling the sheet discharging device control unit and the image forming unit.
