A method for detecting the touch-down of a flying head on a disc is provided to determine a contact point between the disc and the head by using the standard deviation of estimation error data for a plurality of power levels supplied to a heater coil. A head(20) connects to a disc(12) and has a write element, a read element, and a heater coil. A voice coil motor connects to the head(20). A controller(64) connects to the head(20) and the voice coil motor, performs a process for collecting estimation error data and determining the standard deviation of the estimation error data, and determines a contact point between the head(20) and the disc(12).
