PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically perform hem-sewing of an end of the fabric of a narrow cylindrical part such as the hem of briefs by folding the fabric end and to achieve secure and beautiful finish. SOLUTION: The sewing apparatus includes a fabric guide 5 for retaining the fabric W fed to a needle position S of a sewing machine 2; fabric feeding means 9 for feeding the fabric W to the needle position S; air blowing means 6 for blowing air to the fabric W in the direction orthogonally crossing the direction of feeding the fabric as seen from the top; in/out adjusting means 8 capable of applying drive to the fabric W to be hauled in the direction opposite from the direction of blowing air; and a fabric end detection part 7 for detecting the state of the fabric end matching a prescribed position of the fabric guide 5 in the inward/outward direction relative to the needle position S.
