PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operation method of a rotary kiln capable of efficiently burning a treated object by detecting the distribution of a temperature in a furnace, monitoring the inside of the furnace, and adjusting a mixing ratio of a recirculated gas and air on the basis of the state of the furnace. SOLUTION: In this operation method of the rotary kiln wherein the treated object 11 is thermally decomposed and gasified in the rotary kiln 1, and burned in a stoker-type combustion furnace 2 disposed at the outlet side of the rotary kiln, an EGR gas 4 is allowed to flow back to the treated object charging side of the rotary kiln 1 and introduced, and the air 5 is introduced to the treated object charging side of the rotary kiln 1, a generating position of flame 10 is monitored by a visible camera 6 so that it is located within a range of 1/3 to 2/3 from the treated object charging side of the rotary kiln, further a thermo viewer 15 is disposed at the outlet side of the rotary kiln 1 to detect a furnace temperature zone, and to monitor the inside of the furnace, and the operation is controlled by adjusting the mixing ratio of the EGR gas 4 and the air 5.
