PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maximize a low temperature premixing combustion region while avoiding occurrence of premature ignition, and to sufficiently restrain generation of nitrogen oxides or soot in a diesel engine capable of burning fuel just after injection of the fuel which is injected in the vicinity of a compression top dead center by controlling an intake temperature and capable of simultaneously achieving low emission performance and improvement in fuel consumption. SOLUTION: In an operation region of low temperature premixing combustion, fuel injection timing is gradually advanced until premature ignition occurs, an advance amount in occurrence of premature ignition is compared with an advance amount of a first prescribed amount, and the low temperature premixing combustion region is increased (A) when the advance amount in occurrence of the premature ignition is larger than the first prescribed amount, and the low temperature premixing combustion region is decreased (B) when the advance amount is smaller than an advance amount of a second prescribed amount smaller than the first prescribed amount.
