<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a serial access memory in which the cost of process development is cut down and a chip size is reduced. <P>SOLUTION: This serial access memory has write registers T1, T2, ..., for temporarily storing data, a memory array having memory cells 11 and having a plurality of memory columns 10 that connect the memory cells 11 by word lines WL1, WL2, ..., and a second switch SW1 connected between the write registers T1, T2, ..., and the memory columns 10 to perform conduction between the write registers T1, T2, ..., and the memory columns 10 in response to second selection signals WTR1 to 4.
