Disclosed are a driver status monitoring system and an operating method thereof which can acquire a driver image to prevent degradation in pattern recognition by solar light reflection. According to an aspect of the present invention, the driver status monitoring system comprises: a near infrared (NIR) control unit to turn on an NIR light towards a driver; an image acquisition unit to alternately acquire a first facial image frame of the face of the driver photographed while the NIR light is turned on and a second facial image frame of the face of the driver photographed while the NIR light is turned off, or selectively acquire only the first facial image frame; an image processing unit to calculate an image difference between the first and the second facial image frame to generate a differential image frame; and a driver status monitoring (DSM) performing unit to use the differential image frame or the first facial image frame to check whether the driver negligently keeps eyes forwards. |
