[Also in Division F2] An apparatus for making tubes from metal strip comprises a shaping station, a welding station and draw-off devices each with gripper jaws to feed the strip through the shaping and welding stations, at least one device being positioned upstream from the welding station. The strip is shaped to form a longitudinally seamed tube by rollers (4), Fig. 1 (not shown), after having its edges trimmed by cutters (3). The strip is fed by grippers 11, 16, 19, 20, 43 which each comprise a pair of jaws 31, 32, Fig. 3, mounted on carriages 24 and movable to grip and release the tube by cam surfaces 12, 13 on which rollers 35, 36 run. The carriages 24 are mounted on a pair of chains 25, 26 which pass over sprockets 27, 28. Central cam surfaces 18, 22 are positioned to open the jaws by abutment with pins 38, 39 on the jaws at the welding station 17 and at the end of the device. The longitudinally welded tube is corrugated and wound on to a drum.</p> |
