Manufacturing fibrillated continuous filament yarns of high bulk and good tensile strength, in which the yarn is submitted to a two-stage process of mechanically splitting the filaments and then of spreading them to disorient the fibrils, and enabling them. The second stage is conveniently carried out by submitting the fibrillated yarn from the first stage to the action of a high velocity stream of gas, e.g. air. The first stage treatment whereby the individual filament produced from a polymer mixture of two substantially immiscible polymers in split and torn away in places to produce the fibrils, may be carried out in a number of ways e.g. (1) by passing the yarn (or strip of thin film) first between a pair of axially grooved rolls and then through a pair of wire-brush rolls, or (2) the yarn may be passed, preferably at an angle, over a sharp edged plate or guide and then through a pair of wire brush rolls or (3) passing the yarn through a pair of aligned holes in parallel plates, the second of which can be caused to reciprocate in its plane. Other combinations of these or equivalent methods may be used. In each case the product yarn is submitted to the treatment with a high velocity gas stream to produce the final bulky yarn.
|
