1,140,944. Spline connections. CHRYSLER CORP. 5 April, 1966 [3 May, 1965], No. 15144/66. Heading F2U. In a spline connection between a shaft 20 formed with splines 64 which slidingly engage with splines 66 in a gear-wheel 68, springs 150, 152, having end portions 154 gripping the axial end surfaces of the gear splines, are placed on the coast side of reduced thickness splines 66a, 66b, to urge the drive sides of the gear and shaft splines into engagement to prevent rattle. The springs may alternatively be secured to the shaft splines. The shaft 20 may form the output shaft of a variable-speed gear, the gear wheel 68 constituting the first speed gear. Again, Fig. 8 (not shown), the invention may be applied to the splines of a hub (176) splined to the output shaft (170) between a direct drive or top speed gear (178) and a third speed gear (180), and the splines of a clutch sleeve (186). |
