A machine for grinding the heads of poppet valves which must be held in predetermined angular relation with a grinding wheel comprises a grinding wheel 14 mounted on a wheel support 12 for rotation about an axis, a work support 18 having dual work-holding and rotating members 20, the axes of rotation of the members intersecting the axis of rotation of the grinding wheel. The grinding wheel is disposed in a vertical plane and is advanced and retracted by a mechanism 16 acting on support 12. The work support 18 includes the two work-holding members 20 driven by motors 21, 22, respectively, the motors being connected by belts to the spindles of the work-holders which include automatic opening and closing means for the chucks of the work-holders. Means are also provided for automatically positioning the workpieces and for ejecting them, and a dual loader 33 supplies workpieces to the workholders. The axes of the work-holders intersect the axis of the grinding wheel at a common point when the grinding wheel is in a mean position between its original diameter and final diameter due to wear. The grinding wheel support may be pivotable so as to maintain the intersection of the axes as the grinding wheel wears. |
